Classes at Cool Spring, 1469 Lloyd Rd. in Charles Town, W.Va. Cool Spring is a nonprofit organization that provides exciting learning experiences in art and nature in a beautiful natural setting. April 1 to April 5, 10 to 13 year olds can participate in a Spring Breakout. Youngsters can draw, paint and write in journals about the nature all around them. Clark Dixon, who has spent his career working with youth in the National Park Service and as a professional educator will lead the class. Clark is a serious artist and works in watercolor, drawing, pastels and colored pencils. Starting April 7 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., artist Judy Bradshaw will teach drawing and painting to all levels of artists.

Open the front door to the Catoctin Creek distillery in Purcellville, Va., and enter a wave of fragrance: the tang of fermenting grain. In a nearly nondescript industrial park, a good half-mile from the historic and lovely center of town, Scott and Becky Harris are doing something that nobody has done, at least legally, in Loudoun County since Prohibition. They’re making whiskey.
