Flights of Fancy
This issue of Valley Homes and Style is dedicated to going green, so let's not forget the winged creatures that help keep this planet in shape. Birds and butterflies keep plants growing by pollinating them. Birds boost tree growth by 30 percent by digesting damaging parasites and insects, plus birds sow seeds in other areas when flying overhead and dropping them.

We do our part in keeping these critters well fed and happy by planting colorful gardens to attract them, hanging feeders and houses for them to enjoy and providing water from ponds or birdbaths.

Both birds and butterflies are beautiful, and some are quite extraordinary in color, making their images a hot item in the home decor and gift market. Here are a few ideas ...

Framed prints of birds and butterflies can be used in any room of your home and seem to go with almost any other art you have. They make great companions to landscapes, portraits, still lives or even abstract art. Hang in twos, threes, fours or sixes, horizontally or vertically stacked on the wall to make a great focal point and give an illusion that a small wall is bigger. Mix sizes of prints -- for example, hang a small print under a larger one on one wall and do the opposite on an adjoining wall. Or add art in other spots -- on a bookcase, atop a hutch or china cupboard, dresser or side table.

Transferware Glass
This is glass with an art image transferred to it. You can still see through the glass, which becomes stunning with light shining through it. They make a great statement in any room. Glass trays range from a small trinket or soap dish to large enough to place on an easel as art. Candles can be poured into transferware glass and look fabulous with a flickering flame shining through. These look great singly placed anywhere or in multiples on a mantle or down the center of a dining room table.

Happy Homes
Bird houses and cages give a nice touch to a room. They come in all shapes, sizes and materials, from wood to metal, traditional to rustic. The obvious place for these is in a sunroom, but you can use them in many rooms. Hang a bird house or cage in the center of a wall and hang bird, nest or egg prints or plates around it.

Small Touches
These can leave a huge impact when decorating. For example, place a wrapped fragrant soap in a guest bathroom; perch a little bird figurine on a windowsill or shelf; set a colorful butterfly paperweight on a desk; position a nature book with a great cover on a coffee table or faced cover outward on a bookshelf; wrap a garland of faux butterflies around trellis or topiary or even atop a curtain rod; use bird or butterfly fabrics on toss pillows, drapes or furniture.

The ideas are endless, so enjoy your flights of fancy in your home.
